The CrossFit community has long been known for its charitable efforts and the work it has done to give back to its local communities.

One big thing: The holiday season is often the peak time of the year for giving back, with many nonprofits raising up to one-third of their revenue during December. This year, we surveyed local affiliates worldwide to find out how they are giving back to their communities this holiday season and how your affiliate can as well.

Host a Charitable Event: A CrossFit-themed event where proceeds and/or donations are for charity is a great way to give back to the community.

  • For the past eight years, CrossFit Amoskeag of Bedford, NH, has hosted a charitable event to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
  • This year, they plan to host the same event but will be donating to a local animal shelter.
  • Similarly, Bionic CrossFit in Newington, CT, has hosted an in-house holiday competition for several years.
  • The admission to participate in the competition is simply an item for their annual toy drive, though all members are encouraged to donate to the toy drive whether they compete or not.
  • The toys are donated to Newington’s local social services department, which distributes them to families in need for the holidays.

Adopt a Family: Adopting a family through the Salvation Army or a local Secret Santa program is a great way to spread the love this holiday season to those who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

  • CrossFit Convergence in Tallahassee, FL, has adopted 10 families through their local Salvation Army. In turn, they have been able to provide holiday celebrations to 10 at-need families who might not have been able to do so themselves.
  • CrossFit Proprius in Santa Rosa, CA, has participated in their local Secret Santa Program for several years.
  • In the first year, they helped to spread holiday cheer to 35 families. That number climbed to 55 in 2022, and this year, they hope to be able to give a holiday celebration to 75 families.
  • The members of CrossFit Northern ICE in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada, have also worked to provide incredible holidays for families in need.
  • For the last four years, they have worked to support “Operation Christmas Wish List” to provide gifts to those who have no family or support system due to homelessness, mental health and/or disabilities.
  • CrossFit Northern ICE provided 31 holiday surprises in 2022, and they hope to do the same this year.

Promise Burpees in Exchange for Donations: There’s nothing like making your coach suffer in the same way you do every day during the workout.

  • That’s why Michael Longmire, the owner of CrossFit River Road in Wheelersburg, OH, has promised his members he will perform one burpee box jump for every meal donated to Myle’s Mission. This organization helps feed families in southern Ohio during the holidays.
  • “With the deadline approaching, it’s looking as if there is going to be a lot more than 100 Burpee Box Jumps [their initial goal] that are going to be done,” Longmire said.
  • “I am proud of our people. Their hearts for others are amazing. Whenever there is a need, they come together and figure out ways to help others. We have an incredible community,” he concluded.

Bring Fitness to All: This season, CrossFit Fair Oaks Ranch in Boerne, TX, offered their space every week to Kinetic Kids to give them a space to train.

  • Kinetic Kids is a nonprofit that helps enrich the lives of children with special needs through sports, fine arts and educational programs.
  • For CrossFit Fair Oaks Ranch, this mission will also expand beyond the holiday season as they work to create a place for Kinetic Kids in their affiliate year-round.

The big picture: Whether you do over 100 burpee box jumps to encourage donations or simply encourage members to participate in a toy drive, this time of year is perfect for exemplifying the incredible assets CrossFit affiliates have proven to be for their communities over the years. If this is your first holiday season, doing something as simple as a donation bin for a local charity can be a great way to show members and the local community that you care.
