Every few years, and potentially more frequently as of late, an athlete seems to come out of the woodwork and blow away events or competitions despite being relatively unknown. Tia-Clair Toomey did this in 2015. Similar timeline for Mat Fraser. Laura Horvath had a mind-blowing rookie season in 2018 and is making a resurgence now. And there is a growing collection of teenage athletes who seem to be knocking on the door of greatness.

When you go back and watch the 2015 CrossFit Games documentary, Toomey gets very little coverage. That is how much of a surprise she was and it was a slightly different time in the sport from now, but these surprises still happen. Remember Jason Hopper at MACC last year?
