Anikha Greer’s 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games season has come to an unceremonious end after her time for Workout 5 of the North American Quarterfinal failed to post before the 12 PM PT deadline on Sunday. She finished 391st in North America with just four scored events, 271 spots below the cutline (top 120 athletes) to advance to the Semifinal stage of the season.

  • In an Instagram post today, Greer wrote: “I finished [Workout 5] Saturday afternoon, a full DAY before it was due, uploaded my video and my score and shut my phone down after a long, LONG weekend and even longer 2 weeks.”
  • “It wasn’t until 12:20 the next day (20 mins past deadline) while at breakfast with the crew that I noticed my dashboard for event 5 was empty,” she continued.
  • “What happened when I clicked submit is an absolute mystery to me.” Greer said, “Whether it be an iPhone glitch or an internet glitch, ultimately, CF never received my score.”
  • “I fully take responsibility for not double checking and screenshotting as I normally do, but I was so certain it was in, and so mentally exhausted/ready to be done and move on,” she concluded.”

For the record: On Friday, the CrossFit Games Instagram page posted a video in which Adrian Bozman specifically goes over Quarterfinals reminders.

  • CrossFit did clarify in a response to Morning Chalk Up that all quarterfinal athletes received an email an hour before each of the four final submission windows reminding them of the upcoming deadline.

More details: Greer was set for a breakout campaign that many projected would result in her first Games appearance. Through the first four workouts of the Quarterfinals the 18-year old was sitting in 15th place in North America with one workout to go.

  • Greer’s unofficial time of 3:50 would have given her a 37th place finish on workout 5.
  • If the score had been submitted and verified, she would have totalled 274 points which would have given her a final placing of 17th.
  • She started this year’s Quarterfinals with solid back-to-back top-10 finishes on Friday to put her 4th on the leaderboard to start the competition. She followed that with 172nd and 38th in Workouts 3 and 4 respectively, dropping her to 15th place overall.

Remind me: Greer has suffered tough luck the last two seasons when it comes to reaching her goal of competing at the Games.

  • 2020 Games season. Greer was set to make her first appearance in Madison, WI, competing in the 16-17 year old teen division after coming up short both in 2019 and 2018. She placed 2nd in the Age Group Online Qualifier and was considered one of the favorites to win the title of “Fittest Teen” before the global COVID-19 pandemic caused the cancellation of all the age group divisions.
  • 2021 Games season. After a standout finish in both the Open (58th worldwide) and the Quarterfinals (26th in North America), Greer just missed out on her first Games invite after placing sixth in the online Atlas Games Semifinal. She was in the running for the Games spot up until the last event in which she placed 10th, causing her to finish behind fellow Canadian Sydney Michalyshen for the final spot by 11 points.
  • Greer did get another shot at a Games invite as her placement in the Atlas Games earned a spot at the Last Chance Qualifier online competition the following week. She would place 22nd in the LCQ, ending her season.

The bottom line: Greer is the most high-profile case we’ve seen of athletes having an issue with score submissions. European Semifinal hopefuls Martine Solheim and Manon Angonese have gone public with their experiences of having their scores denied by CrossFit, in both cases they cited time change and time zone differences. CrossFit has maintained a hardline stance when enforcing the submission deadline standards, showing they will not make exceptions for anyone no matter where they may be on the leaderboard.
