Over the last two days, 16-17 year old age group athletes Trista Smith and Lucy McGonigle have been battling back and forth as the two remain in close contention for 1st place.

Flashback: Having competed against each other twice before, both athletes are making their fourth appearance at the Games this year, as they began competing in 2021 in the 14-15 year old division. In 2022, McGonigle won that age group, and is a new face amongst the 16-17 year olds for 2023. This is Smith’s second year in the 16-17 age group, having placed 4th last year.

Both McGonigle and Smith competed in separate Semifinals this spring as individuals, however neither of them managed to qualify.

2023 Games: Age group competition began on Tuesday, and concludes today, after eight tests.

  • On day one, the athletes finished their first two tests tied in points, then ended competition with a margin of 20 points, McGonigle in the lead.
  • At midday on day two, they maintained a 20 point separation, with both having nabbed two first place finishes.
  • Heading into day three, after six events, Smith and McGonigle are tied for 1st place with 510 points after Smith took 2nd in the 5k and McGonigle finished in 4th.

Bottom line: At this point, this race is as close as one can get, with the teens not only tied for points, but with two test wins each under their belts–Smith has the advantage over McGonigle with higher test placings overall. With over 170 points ahead of the other eight athletes, it’s safe to say that either McGonigle or Smith will finish atop the podium, but with one more day yet to come, it’s anyone’s guess as to who will be crowned the winner.
