2024 CrossFit Games Europe Semifinals Day 2 Recap: Gabi Migala Holds the Lead, Laura Horvath Closes In

Poland’s Gabriela Migala, defending Europe Semifinal champ, started this year’s competition with an event win on Friday and did just enough to hold onto her lead at the 2024 CrossFit Games Europe Semifinal in Décines-Charpieu, France, on Saturday.

  • She held off her hard-charging training partner, best friend, and Fittest Woman on Earth, Laura Horvath. Migala leads by just three points.

After placing seventh in Event 1 on Friday, Horvath came out hot Saturday morning with a win in Event 2. But some no reps during Event 3 — both on a legless rope climb and box jump-overs — cost Horvath at least one place on the event.

The UK’s Aimee Cringle — looking to punch her first ticket to the Games — sits in third but is tied in points with Horvath after putting in three consistent performances (second, fourth, and fifth, respectively).

Other big showings: Sweden’s Emma Tall, fourth, has also shown up all weekend, finishing Saturday with an easy event win.

  • Also worth noting, Norway’s Jacqueline Dahlstrom is proving she is back after failing to qualify last season. She sits somewhat comfortably in sixth, four spots and 36 points above the cut line.

On the bubble: Spain’s Elena Carratala Sanahuja, who is trying to return to the Games after qualifying in 2022, sits exactly where you don’t want to be: one spot outside the cut line in 11th.

She is chasing Dutchwoman Linda Keesman in 10th and UK’s Jennifer Muir in ninth, both of whom are looking to punch their rookie tickets.

Worth noting: Three other athletes who qualified from the Europe Semifinal last season — Elisa Fuliano, Manon Angonese, and Rebecka Vitesson — all sit out the top 10 in 13th, 18th, and 20th, respectively.

  • Vitesson, a rookie last season, came down awkwardly on a rope climb halfway through Event 3 and appeared to injure her knee. She lay on the floor clutching at her knee and then continued the event. She was later carried off the floor after her leg buckled while stepping down from a box jump-over. Her injury status is unknown.

The big picture: Though there’s only one day of competition left in France, three workouts and 50 percent of the points are still on the table.

  • And, with just three points separating the top three and 15 points separating 10th from 14th, the battle for CrossFit Games berths in Europe is nowhere near over.
