Where There’s a Will, There’s a Workout: Creative Solutions During the Equipment Shortage

Every day around 11:00 AM, a tall, muscular man pulls his truck in front of our garage and opens the back gate. He pushes the button to open the garage door then loads pairs of 20, 25, 30, 35, and 50 pound dumbbells into the back of his truck. The man reappears an hour later and repeats the process, this time returning the dumbbells to the garage.
This man is my husband’s cousin who lives a few blocks away from our home in San Diego, California. The 35 and 50 pound dumbbells are ours -- he and his friends own the 20 and 25 pound weights. We’d managed to purchase our dumbbells at a nearby used sporting goods store the Sunday after schools shut down in San Diego in mid-March. We weren’t the only people who bought weights when gyms began shutting down. Soon most exercise equipment was either impossible to find or comically expensive.
