Day three of the 2021 individual competition at the CrossFit Games opened with only 30 athletes in each division, but that number would be cut to 20 after event ten, the first event of the morning. After five grueling events on Friday, the fittest athletes on earth tackled three more today, including a test of running and gymnastics, and then, a one-rep max snatch. As the sun set, Toomey extended her lead, while on the men’s side, the leaderboard remained volatile, as Medeiros hung on to the top spot. Here’s how it all played out.

    • 30 Toes-to-Bar
    • 1.5 Mile Run
    • 30 Toes-to-Bar
    • Time Cap: 36 Minutes

Women’s Division Recap:

  • A lengthy test of running and gymnastics, event ten is night-and-day different from the fast and painful 21-15-9 couplet that was event nine. And, there is the additional pressure that ten men and ten women will be cut at the conclusion of the event.
  • Sam Briggs and Kristin Holte got out to a quick lead on the first long run after the first set of 30 toes-to-bar. Haley Adams, Tia-Clair Toomey and Kristi Eramo-O’Connell followed close behind. After the first lap, Emily Rolfe slid into second place. That pack held held the lead through first two laps and got right to work on 30 more toes-to-bar.
  • Through the first lap of the second run, Briggs held onto the lead, but only barely with Rolfe and Eramo-O’Connell close behind. Adams and Toomey stayed close. After the first of two lap, Briggs dropped to third as Eramo-O’Connell stepped on the gas with Rolfe keeping the pressure on. Just before finishing the run, Rolfe edged out Eramo-O’Connell. Meanwhile, Adams pulled up tight to Briggs.
  • It’s all going to come down to the final set of toes-to-bar. The leaders hit the rig for that last set at just over 20 minutes. No one can break if they want to win this event. Rolfe finished her last rep just before Eramo-O’Connell and took the event win at 21:12.73, Earamo-O’Connell finished in 21:13.90. Adams out-legged Briggs for third place at 21:36.45 followed by Toomey in fifth.
  • Notable finishes:
    • Gabi Migala — 7th
    • Katrin Davidsdottir — 10th
    • Mal O’Brien — 11th
    • Danielle Brandon — 14th
    • Laura Horvath — 15th

Men’s Division Recap:

  • There was almost no separation among the men following the first set of toes-to-bar. Uldis Upenieks and Bayden Brown held a slight lead with Justin Medeiros and many others close behind. Into the second lap, Upenieks and Brown opened up a little more. The camera panned to Scott Panchik who is gutting out a tough race while dealing with a knee injury. Brown is the first back to the rig for the second set of toes-to-bar.
  • Brown headed out for the second run at 10:29 with Justin Medeiros not far behind. The camera highlighted Fikowski who is way behind the leaders and appears to be struggling with a hamstring or other left leg injury. Brown extended his lead on the first part of the run as Medeiros, Upenieks and a few others formed a pack several meters back. By the end of the second run, Brown opened up a huge lead, but Lazar Dukic closed the gap. Medeiros and Cole Sager are not far behind with Ulpenieks as well.
  • Out of nowhere, Dukic comes off the bar first and outlegs Brown for the event win at 21:10.18. Upenieks took third with a time of 21:22.73, while Cole Sager grabbed fourth at a crucial moment in 21:28.18, and Medeiros took sixth after Will Moorad in fifth at 21:36.01.

Women’s Division Recap:

  • The pegboard is back in 2021 and this time it’s part of an AMRAP with single-arm dumbbell overhead squats and heavy double-unders which mostly serve as interference.
  • In heat one, there was no separation in round one between Katrin Davidsdottir, Danielle Brandon and Jacqueline Dahlstrom. By the half-way point, Brandon had taken over the lead, but Baylee Rayl and Emma McQuaid stayed close. Arielle Loewen wasn’t too far behind either.
  • By the end of the heat, Brandon completed 226 reps, setting the score to beat. Baylee Rayl was just behind with 215, while Emma McQuasi grabbed 3rd in the heat at 208.
  • In heat two, Tia-Clair Toomey got out to a quick lead with Haley Adams just behind her. But two minutes in, Adams received a costly no-rep on a pegboard. Laura Horvath moved into second behind Toomey with Kristin Holte, Annie Thorisdottir and Mal O’Brien keeping the pressure on.
  • Just past the half-way point, Toomey stayed out in front, while Horvath and O’Brien stayed close. With :90 seconds left, Toomey held her lead over Horvath and O’Brien. Toomey made a final push, taking the event win with 231 reps, taking her 30th ever career win, overtaking Mat Fraser. • Panchik kept it close, but Sager wouldn’t be deterred, taking the event win with 276 reps. Panchik took second in the heat with 253, while Jeffrey Adler grabbed third in the heat at 245.
  • In heat two, Brent Fikowski had a slight lead in the early rounds, but Bjorgvin Karl Gudmundsson quickly overtook him. Vellner and Fikowski stayed close, despite Fikowski’s hamstring injury. Lazar Dukic is also starting to make a move at 7 minutes into the workout. Jonne Koski got in the mix in the second half of the event as well.
  • With less than 2 minutes left, Dukic took over. And with :20 seconds left, Dukic put the pedal down, completing 269 reps, taking second.

Event 12:

  • For Load
    • 1-Rep Max Snatch

  • This is basically the homerun derby of the CrossFit Games. A 1-rep max snatch. The athletes are chomping at the bit, as is the crowd. Get ready for it to get loud in the Coliseum.
  • Athletes were required to start at 160 pounds, lifting two at a time. If more than one athlete misses a lift, the 2 or more will face off in a tie breaker of a 3 squat snatch race at 145 pounds. The entire field made it through the first barbell. The next weight is 170, the field cleared that weight, except for Kristi Eramo-O’Connell. The third round was 175. Baylee Rayl and Emily Rolfe were the only two to miss. Rayl won the tiebreaker.
  • The 180 bar proved more difficult. Jacqueline Dahlstrom, Haley Adams and Kristin Holte all failed. In the tiebreaker, Dahlstrom took first, Adams second and Holte third.
  • On the 185 bar, Emma Tall, Arielle Loewen, Mal O’Brien, and Amanda Barnhart all missed. During the tiebreaker, Barnhart lifted angry and crushed her competitors, taking 11th overall.

  • The 195 bar saw Danielle Brandon, Gabi Migala and Laura Horvath miss. Annie Thorisdottir and Tia-Clair Toomey both hit it. In the tiebreaker, Laura Horvath took the win.
  • On the 200 pound bar, Annie Thorisdottir hit it with a totally shocked look on her face. Tia-Clair Toomey tied her easily.
