2021 CrossFit Games Individual Final Day Recap, Line-By-Line

The final day of the 2021 individual competition at the CrossFit Games opened with three events on tap and by the end of the day, three men and three women atop the podium. Fifteen tough events rounded out a stout competition, but when it was all said and done, Tia-Clair Toomey made history once again, and the men’s division crowned a new champion in Justin Medeiros. Here’s the final recap.

Event 13:

    • 20 GHD Sit-Ups
    • 8 Cheese Curd Burpees Over the Hay Bale, 100/ 70 pounds
    • 168-foot Yoke Carry, 605/425 pounds

    • Time Caps by Round: 2 | 2 | 2 | 3 Minutes

Men’s Division Recap:

  • This event is kind of a mash-up of the Madison Triplet and Strong Man’s Fear with some GHD sit-ups and the 2,2,2,3 interval time caps that have been used before.
  • With all the athletes on the field at once, Noah Ohlsen, Royce Dunne and Bjorgvin Karl Gudmundsson, as well as Pat Vellner and Justin Medeiros nearly completed the event in the first interval.
  • In the second interval, Gudmundsson took the win with Vellner and Medeiros close behind.
  • Notable finishes:
    • Noah Ohlsen — 5th
    • Cole Sager — 7th
    • Jayson Hopper — 10th
    • Brent Fikowski — 11th

Women’s Division Recap:

  • The women took the field and in the first interval, Tia-Clair Toomey and Laura Horvath crushed the first interval, nearly finishing the event in the first two minutes. In the second time block, Toomey finished first, Horvath nabbed second, as Thorisdottir took third.
  • Notable finishes:
    • Kristin Holte — 5th
    • Katrin Davidsdottir — 8th
    • Mal O’Brien — 10th
    • Haley Adams — 12th

Event 14: 

  • 6-10-14 Reps of:
    • Deadlifts, 405/275 pounds, Short Bar
    • Freestanding Handstand Push-Ups
    • Time Cap: 7 Minutes

Men’s Division Recap:

  • Event 14 saw the introduction of a new movement — the freestanding handstand push-ups combined with heavy deadlifts. The rep scheme was small, but in an ascending ladder.
  • In heat one, Noah Ohlsen took an early lead after the round of six, as several men struggled with the handstand push-ups. Cole Sager was the next athlete to complete the first round. In the round of 10, Scott Panchik started to close the gap with Ohlsen. In the final round, Panchik continued to advance, but at the seven minute cap, Ohlsen was one rep ahead taking the heat win.
  • In the final heat, Pat Vellner and Justin Medeiros were neck-and-neck after the round of six. Bjorgvin Karl Gudmundsson was in third in the middle round. Halfway through the round of ten, Medeiros began to struggle with handstand push-ups and Vellner opened up a small lead. Saxon Panchik started to make a move as well.
  • Vellner hit the barbell for the round of 14 first, but Medeiros stayed close. In the final set of handstand push-ups, Medeiros closed the gap, but it was Vellner who took the event win as the first man to finish the event at 6:31.65. Medeiros grabbed second.

    • Guilherme Malheiros — 9th
    • Jeffrey Adler — 13th

Women’s Division Recap:

  • In the first heat, Arielle Loewen took the lead in round one, followed quickly by Katrin Davidsdottir, Emma McQuaid and Emily Rolfe. Rolfe grabbed the lead in the middle round, but Davidsdottir kept it close. The two women battled it out through the deadlifts in the round of 14, but Davidsdottir held on for the heat win, just four reps shy of finishing, Rolfe took second in the heat.
  • In the final heat, Annie Thorisdottir got out to a quick lead with Kristin Holte just behind. In the round of ten, Holte closed the gap, Tia-Clair Toomey and Mal O’Brien, as well as Danielle Brandon were just a bit behind. In the final set of handstand push-ups, Toomey caught up to Holte. Meanwhile, Thorisdottir finished the event in 5:22.12, taking the event win, the 14th of her career. Holte took second in the event at 5:33.67. Toomey took third in 6:10.06, while Brandon was the only other woman to finish, taking fourth at 6:41.85.

Event 15: 

  • For time:
    • 600-m Row
    • 90 Chest-to-Bar Pull-Ups
    • 36-ft. Back-Rack Walking Lunge, 185/135 pounds, Short Bar 
    • 36-ft. Front-Rack Walking Lunge
    • 36-ft. Overhead Walking Lunge 
    • Time Cap: 11 Minutes

Men’s Division Recap:

  •  In the first heat, Scott Panchik took the competition floor for the final time at the CrossFit Games. Travis Mayer got out to a small lead on the pull-ups with Jeffery Adler and Scott Panchik close behind.  By the end of the pull-ups, Panchik had the lead. Cole Sager, Travis Mayer and others kept the pressure on. Mayer took the heat win with a time of 7:15.89. Panchik finished in 7:16.20.
  • In the final heat, Lazar Dukic took the lead with a large group just behind, including Justin Medeiros and Patrick Vellner. Koski got to the bar first, but Medeiros was ahead of Vellner. Going unbroken through the back and front rack lunges, Medeiros took a break before the overhead lunges, but put an exclamation point on his weekend, winning the final event, clinching his first ever Games win, becoming the youngest male Games winner in history.

    • Noah Ohlsen — 7th
    • Pat Vellner — 11th
    • Brent Fikowski — 15th

Women’s Division Recap:

  • The first heat, Emma Cary took a slight lead on the pull-ups with Jacqueline Dahlstrom, Katrin Davidsdottir and several others close behind. Baylee Rayl got in on the action as well. Cary was the first through the back rack lunge, but Dahlstrom passed her on the front rack portion. Cary started the overhead portion first and took the event win at 7:37.39. Davidsdottir finished just behind her at 7:39.81.
  • In the final heat, first and second place were both locked up by Tia-Clair Toomey and Laura Horvath, but third was still up for grabs between Annie Thorisdottir and Kristin Holte. Thorisdottir got off to an early lead over Holte on the pull-ups. Horvath and Toomey led the heat, with O’Brien just behind. Toomey got to the barbell first as Adams moved into third in the heat. Toomey took the heat and event win at 6:22.22, making history with her fifth consecutive win. Meanwhile, Thorisdottir outpaced Holte to take the third place podium position.
