CompTrain is taking their gym programming and making it more inclusive to affiliates by taking away the price tag. The online training program developed over the past four years is doing away with charging affiliates $39.99 a month and providing the same programming material for free.

The details: For affiliates who are on the paid program of CompTrain Gym, expect all of the same amenities that you’re used to seeing on SugarWOD, but now it will be free to current and new gyms that sign up.

  • The program offers affiliates class programming and coaching development to run an effective hour-long CrossFit class.
  • Included is a timeline, workout brief, class logistics, general and specific warm-ups, daily focus, and strategy.
  • If you still have members who aren’t back to working out at the gym, they also offer at home workouts and equipment-free options.
  • To help explain specific movements, you’ll have access to a full video library.

One big thing: Moving from a $40 membership to free is a loss in revenue for CompTrain. But the question is how much and will it have a significant impact. They wouldn’t give specifics on how many gyms they currently have signed up for affiliate programming, but here are some number breakdowns of other reputable programs to add relevance.

  • CAP, CrossFit’s new affiliate program, had 1,790 affiliates sign up after just 24 hours of the launch.
  • While the program is currently free through the year, come 2022, it’s expected to cost $150 a month.
  • That’s $268,500 in monthly recurring revenue if all 1,790 affiliates remain in the program, more than $3.2 million annually.
  • Another popular training program, NCFIT owned by former CrossFit Games athlete Jason Khalipa, charges $149 a month to affiliates for programming, so similar math could be conducted to calculate their revenue. A significant impact to their income.

Reading between the lines, CompTrain probably doesn’t have nearly 1800 affiliates following their program that would result in a more than $3 million loss annually. But regardless of the numbers, CompTrain’s owner and head coach Ben Bergeron said, making the affiliate program free to gyms wasn’t a decision driven by dollar signs.

  • “We are not interested in getting a bigger piece of the pie, we want to make the pie bigger. We feel, as we all get better, as we all grow, as we all improve, there is a carry over effect across the entire community,” said Bergeron.

The move to free programming: Back in March, CompTrain hired Denise Thomas, a Seminar Staff and CrossFit Level 4 coach, to take over the CompTrain gym programming and programming for CrossFit New England. They also hired Jenna Sanders around the same time to take over the commercial operations. Together, Thomas and Sanders wanted to offer more to the community and started thinking more broadly about how they could do that. Eventually, they decided switching over to free programming for affiliates was a great place to start.

Why it matters: With 80% of gyms reporting they’re still facing financial hardship due to COVID-19, finding reputable class programming that’s affordable can be difficult. With a well-known program like CompTrain now free, affiliates can be confident that they’re getting a top-tier program for their members while saving costs at the same time.

  • “By making CompTrain Gym free, we are trying to do our small part to help gym owners; they lead incredibly busy lives, and our hope is that this allows them to focus on giving their members the best hour of their day,” said Pete Roney, CEO of CompTrain.

The bottom line: The move from paid programming to free for CompTrain Gym will gibe gyms a valuable, time-saving resource at no cost to them. By providing helpful and professional resources to gyms, CompTrain can potentially assist boxes in training more members effectively without the financial burden that having additional charges can put on the affiliates.
