During athlete check-in, athletes at the ELFIT CrossFit Championship were introduced to a familiar object — the pegboard — but instead of climbing up, they’ll traverse sideways while free-hanging from the pegs.

Where’d it come from?: This is the first time Morning Chalk Up has seen a sideways traverse of the pegboard programmed in a CrossFit competition. However, the idea isn’t brand new. It was inspired by an obstacle course race in Giza, Egypt that used the pegboard traverse three years ago.

  • The event is called Epic Ruya and it was part of the US-based Epic Series.
  • ELFIT’s organizer Adam Elzoghby said he saw the movement at the event three years ago. Due to safety, budget and “doing something different” they decided to implement this movement instead of the vertical one.
  • Ensuring all athletes’ safety on a vertical pegboard would have required crash mats, a taller rig and a mounting board for athletes’ feet, all of which would have required significant additional expenses.
  • Athletes were able to freely practice the sideways traverse to familiarize themselves with the new movement.
  • Dozens of athletes took advantage to practice and it proved difficult for many.

Event details: The new movement is a part of event 7, “Jingle Bells,” which takes place on Saturday, the final day of competition. Athletes will be required to complete three lengths (left to right equals one rep).
