Athletes took on three events on Day 2 in New Capital Sports City, Egypt.

They started the day with a long aerobic workout including biking, swimming and running with a 150m sandbag carry to finish, followed by a nice six hour-break.

  • You can read more about that event in detail in our event 3 recap
  • Emma Morgan: “That’s the worst thing I’ve ever done in my life.”

Events 5 and 6

Athletes reassembled once the sun set for a quick shuttle sprint into sled drag. It was a true all out sprint as the slowest time barely exceeded 90 seconds for men and less than 2-minutes for women.

Athletes quickly warmed back up for the 3RM clean event underneath the tennis stadium lights. It was a packed house with every seat full.

Fikowski swept the day with three straight event wins. He’s now won five out of six events. His only mishap came in event 1 when a stomach bug caused him to throw up mid-5K run.

The men’s race is now really for second and third. Twenty-eight points separate 2nd from 4th with 300 points still up for grabs.

Games team athlete Antonia Falt-Kottulinsky shot the moon with her 110kg 3RM clean, which was 15 kilos heavier than any other athlete. Combined with her 3rd place finish on Event 5, she was able to extend her lead from 22 to 34 points ahead of second.

Some strategic gamesmanship on the women’s side resulted in a four-way tie for second as Emma Morgan hit a critical 95kg PR to move back up into fourth. Fellow South Africans Megan Faul and Gilmari Reyneke are both squarely in contention for both a podium spot and to overtake Falt-Kottulinsky if they execute on Sunday. Only 34 points separate first from second and 42 points from first to third.
