After winning this year’s Semifinals in the Men’s 45-49-year-old division, you might expect three-time masters CrossFit Games champion Jason Grubb to be devoting all of his time to attempting to win a fourth title in August.

And while standing on top of the podium again this summer is his goal, Grubb has also found the time and energy to launch the Bolder Athlete Bonus Program, an initiative that will offer cash prizes to masters athletes this summer.

  • “The spirit of CrossFit lies in the community. It’s not just about individual accomplishments but about pushing each other, celebrating each other, and growing together. While I may be competing myself, I am also a part of this larger community, and I feel it’s crucial to contribute and give back in any way I can,” said Grubb, who has chosen a nomadic life, living and training out of an RV that’s constantly traveling to a new destination.

The details: Bolder Athlete—a company that offers specialized training programs and injury prevention resources to masters athletes—will be offering masters athletes $50 for every event win at this summer’s Games.

  • Further, Grubb has also secured various sponsors to support the initiative, including BlackLabel Supplements, Thirdzy, and Barbell Apparel, who will be offering other prizes and sponsorship opportunities for winners.
  • Grubb is hoping $50 an event win is just the beginning. “We’re a startup company right now, but we believe in dreaming big…As our company grows in the coming years, our prize purse is sure to increase, making the competition even more thrilling for these amazing athletes,” he said.

Ultimately, he’s hoping the Bolder Athlete Bonus Program will spark interest in other companies to support masters athletes.

  • “Programs that can subsidize costs related to training, travel, equipment, and competition entry fees would be of enormous benefit. We want to ensure that financial constraints don’t limit an athlete’s ability to train, compete, and reach their potential in the sport they love so much. The masters athlete demographic is large and influential, and investing in them is a win-win situation for everyone involved,” he said.

The big picture: As important as financial support is for all athletes competing in CrossFit, for Grubb it’s about a whole lot more than that.

  • “The essence of our program is not only about the monetary reward, it’s about appreciating, acknowledging, and celebrating the dedication and passion that these athletes bring to every event,” Grubb said.
  • “(These athletes) often juggle their CrossFit pursuits with other life commitments. It’s about making each win more memorable and rewarding for them. And let’s not forget, a little friendly competition never hurt anyone. It only pushes us all to become better,” he added.

On his end, Grubb is hoping the “friendly competition” this summer will land him atop the podium again this summer.

“This summer is going to be one for the books,” he said.
