After 17 Years and Counting, INOV8 Has Unfinished Business in the CrossFit Market

The name INOV8 is well known in the CrossFit community as a challenger shoe brand with several elite CrossFit athletes under its umbrella, including Dani Speegle and Scott Panchik.

  • What most people don’t realize is that INOV8 is actually one of the OG shoe brands in the CrossFit community, with a presence dating back to 2009.

What makes their story even more unique is that INOV8 didn’t even know what CrossFit was when CrossFit athletes started buying their shoes. Their entry into the CrossFit shoe market was entirely accidental.

How It Happened

INOV8 was founded by Wayne Edy in the UK mountains in 2003. Edy noticed a gap in the off-road running market for a lighter, more natural-feeling shoe with enough grip for the gnarly terrain.

  • Their first attempt was the MUDROC 290, designed to work naturally with the foot, which began to gain traction in the UK and Europe.

In 2009, INOV8 redesigned its F-LITE 230 mountain running shoe, but it didn’t really take off with trail runners as anticipated, explained Lee Procter, INOV8’s communications manager, who has been with the company for 13 years.

While the shoe didn’t resonate with runners, it was spotted by some CrossFit athletes in North America, who immediately embraced it.

  • Back then, the market for versatile functional training shoes was small, prompting many early CrossFit enthusiasts to follow powerlifters and choose Converse Chuck Taylors as their preferred training shoes.

Word spread about INOV8’s super-light, nimble, relatively flat-soled F-LITE 230 shoe, and pretty soon INOV8 was inundated with demand.

  • “All of a sudden, we started getting all this demand from the United States, and we were like, ‘Where is this coming from?’ Retailers began contacting us, too,” Procter explained. “It exploded fast, and we had to get as many shoes as we could out to the states really quickly.”

I remember this explosion well. I was one year into CrossFit at the time, and one day nobody had heard of them; the next, they were the dominant shoe at my gym, CrossFit Vancouver, in British Columbia.

From 2009 to 2011, CrossFit athletes continued to embrace INOV8, including 2013 CrossFit Games champion Sam Briggs, who was an ambassador for the brand.

But then, Reebok came along. And shortly after that, Nike.

Suddenly, INOV8 found it more challenging to compete.

Staying the Course

Though INOV8 has, at times, taken a back seat to some of the bigger brands in the space, they have always maintained a share of the CrossFit shoe market, and CrossFit has remained central to them for the last 17 years.

  • “We never left CrossFit. There have been challenges, but it’s been a crucial part of our business since 2009. Over the last three years, we’ve been resurgent in the space, with founder Wayne back at the day-to-day helm and all our shoes now featuring a new NATURALFIT shape that enhances performance and foot health. This isn’t a comeback, it’s unfinished business,” said Andy Rowbotham, INOV8’s training category manager.

Case in point: Over the years, INOV8 has signed top CrossFit athletes, including retired CrossFit Games athletes Kara Saunders, Dan Bailey, and Anna Tobias.

Today, INOV8 is well-known in both the running and training shoe markets, and they offer everything from lifting shoes to zero-drop shoes to max-cushioned shoes, but their bestselling shoe is the F-LITE MAX training shoe.

  • Most recently, INOV8 released a limited-edition version of the F-LITE MAX training shoe in collaboration with Speegle at Wodapalooza last month.

Worth noting: INOV8 also has its finger on the pulse of the rise of HYROX and hybrid training. As a result, they have seen a significant increase in sales of their ROADFLY MAX shoe, a road runner with more cushioning but a stable, natural feel.  It weighs just 275 grams, has a 6 mm heel-to-toe drop, and features their new FLYSPEED foam underfoot.

The Big Picture

INOV8’s journey in CrossFit over the last 17 years is evidence that if you build a product CrossFit athletes like, there’s room for challenger brands amid giants like Reebok and Adidas.

Currently, INOV8 is also investing in up-and-coming athletes, including teen CrossFit Games champions Keira McManus and Reese Littlewood, with a focus on developing them and building long-lasting, relationship-based partnerships. The brand is also attending more events and competitions than ever in 2026.

Procter believes the reason a “challenger brand” like INOV8 has been able to stay relevant in such a competitive space for so long is that its shoes deliver, leading to both loyal customers who come back for more and new converts.

  • “We may not be the biggest name, but we do things our own innovative way, we stick to our DNA principles and partner with people who believe and trust in us,” he said.

He added, “Our job is just to get more people into our shoes, because once they try them, we know they’re going to love them.
