We all know that person who is always the first one to hop on the newest gear and gadgets, but still struggles to improve their performance, sleep, stress levels.

Maybe that person is even you?

You’re tracking your macros on one app, your sleep on another, your steps on a third and your workouts on a fourth. So why isn’t it translating to the results you want?

Here’s the thing: You might be tracking everything, but if your data from all your various apps and wearables isn’t working together, your path to improvement can be a challenging one to navigate. Maybe you’re even getting contradictory information because your apps aren’t looking at the big picture.

For better results, when it comes to health and fitness, you need to look at as many aspects of your life as you can to determine what the most impactful changes you can make really are. And often this is far too complex for the human brain, or even a spreadsheet, to compute.

This is at least partly where Kassandra Hobart was coming from when she designed Ommyx, the highly-personalized nutrition tracking and performance app that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to provide individualized recommendations to improve your nutrition, sleep and performance.

  • “It’s not a one-size-fits-all. The app actually will help you in whatever season of life you’re in. It’s not just looking at your historical data, but it’s looking at what you’re doing right now too,” said Hobart, a long-time CrossFit athlete and nutrition therapy practitioner.

In case you missed it: Ommyx started out as a nutrition tracker, but today has evolved into a sophisticated app that considers our interconnectedness, meaning it takes a big picture, holistic approach to helping users make long-lasting nutrition and lifestyle changes that help them reach their goals faster.

  • It does so by integrating with various other popular nutrition, sleep and performance apps or wearables, including Google calendar, Outlook calendar, WHOOP, Oura Ring, Strava, FitBit, Peloton, Garmin, Coros, Concept2, Eight Sleep, Polar, Suunto, Withings, Swift and Apple Health.
  • Then, Ommyx puts all of the data together and analyzes it using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning before providing the user with bite-sized recommendations that can make a big difference in their life.

Five Steps to Improving your Health and Performance with Ommyx

Step 1: Download the Ommyx app and create your profile.

Pretty standard stuff here.

Step 2: Integrate your other apps and wearables

With the tap of a finger, Ommyx lets you select, and give Ommyx access to, all of the other apps and wearables you rely on. The goal here, explained Hobart, “is to connect what we’re seeing on all these different silos in one spot.”

  • In other words, right now you might have your sleep and recovery data stored in one app, your performance data in another, your nutrition tracked in a third, and your daily steps in a fourth. Each app might each provide you with a certain degree of useful information, but as the saying goes, the sum is greater than its parts.
  • In this sense, because Ommyx has access to all of your data, it has the full picture and can take the pieces and put them together in a meaningful way to provide greater nutrition and lifestyle “cross functional recommendations” than each individual app or wearable could individually provide, Hobart explained.

Step 3: Select your goal, or as Ommyx calls it your “Focus”

In the “Focus” section in the Ommyx app, you will choose between four options: athletic readiness, fitness capacity, cognitive performance and physical recovery. It’s super important to choose one of these options, as each one is associated with a metric that closely correlates with each focus.

  • For example, if you improve your heart rate variability (HRV), your athletic readiness will increase, and if you optimize your REM sleep, your cognitive performance will improve. On the other hand, an improved resting heart rate (RHR) will have a positive effect on your fitness capacity, while improving your deep sleep will lead to increased physical recovery.
  • Further, the Focus section allows you to select weekly tasks that are important to you, such as hitting CrossFit workouts five days a week, going for a run twice a week, going to bed at 9 pm or getting seven to eight hours of sleep a night.

Step 4: Begin tracking your nutrition (including your water intake)

What sets Ommyx apart here is that it lets you be as broad or as specific as you want to be. In this sense, you can let Ommyx know you ate steak and potatoes and green salad for dinner or a big bowl of soup for lunch, or you can enter the exact number of each macronutrient you have consumed that day.

  • It’s totally up to you, Hobart explained. You’re able to select daily macronutrient targets or even meal-specific targets for those who want an even more “micro-view” of their nutrition, Hobart explained. “Or you can turn off the targets, so you still still log things so that the recommendations will continue to support you, but you don’t necessarily have to be so hyper-focused with the grams you’re eating, which I think is really cool, and it allows the athlete to take a break from the granular logging,” she added.
  • Note: Not only can Ommyx tell you where you’re at in terms of your daily nutrition targets—for example: 55 percent of your daily carbohydrate target is complete—but it also lets you know weekly and monthly nutrition and recovery trends. This is particularly useful for the perfectionists among us, as it provides a bigger picture, long-term progress report, helping us appreciate positive trends, as opposed to being caught up with being perfect every single day.
  • Further, to make tracking easier, you can search through Ommyx’s extensive food database, and you can also scan barcodes and import URLs from various recipes, or even build your own recipes that get stored in the app. To make this especially easy, and faster, Ommyx allows you to voice log all your nutrition data.
  • Finally, if you have already been tracking your nutrition with another app in recent weeks or months, Ommyx easier transports this data over so you don’t lose it, and more importantly, it means Ommyx will get to know you and your trends a lot faster, once again making recommendations more effective for your individual needs and goals.

Step 5: Let Ommyx work its magic

Sit back, relax, and let Ommyx’s machine learning pull data from the nutrition tracker and all of the other apps and wearables you have given Ommyx permission to assess.

  • Ommyx then takes the data and cross-references it with your focus and goals before recommending bite-sized, practical high and low impact recommendations you can begin implementing right now.
  • You’re then given the choice to accept or reject the recommendations each week as needed. The ones that you accept then become your weekly tasks, along with any other tasks you added yourself.

Some recommendations examples you could receive include:

  • Eat 20 grams of carbohydrates before bed
  • Eat only 10 grams of fat before your CrossFit workout
  • Eat 40 grams of carbohydrates after your CrossFit workout
  • Go to bed 30 minutes earlier than your current bedtime
  • Achieve a heart rate of 165 on your CrossFit workout days

Final key point: Ommyx doesn’t ask you to do an overnight overhaul of your nutrition or lifestyle like some apps or nutrition challenges do. Instead, Ommyx provides a new set of recommendations just once a week, making it more realistic for the user to make lasting changes.

  • Because, as Hobart explained, “It’s small incremental change that will help you efficiently reach your goals.”
