Three years ago, Scotland native Jennifer Muir didn’t know what CrossFit was. Having grown up in sports and with a background in powerlifting, her friend encouraged her to sign up for the Open, though she didn’t fully understand what it was.

Now, she’s sitting in the top heat at the European Semifinal with two top-three finishes so far. This is her first year competing at the Semifinals level, and her appearance also marks the first time Scotland has ever had an athlete compete on the second biggest stage in the sport.

Going into the weekend, Muir knew some tests–specifically Test 1 and Linda–would be in her wheelhouse.

  • “I knew there were gonna be some tough events,” Muir said, referencing Test 2. The workout heavily emphasized muscle up stamina, something that isn’t her strong suit. “But I knew events like Linda and (Test 1) were gonna be strong events, I just didn’t know how strong.”

Despite a 57th place finish in Test 2, Muir is now in a qualifying spot for the CrossFit Games, 10th overall going into Test 4. While she’s proud of her performance and excited by the entire experience, she says it’s still a bit surreal.

  • “The atmosphere pushes you through. Having Laura Horvath chasing you down, that’s something I never thought I would be saying,” Muir said. “It’s incredible, I have so much move for it.”

Women’s Standings After Three Tests:

  1. Annie Thorisdottir – 258

  8. Emma McQuaid – 215
  9. Matilde Garnes – 213
  10. Jennifer Muir – 197
  11. Ella Wunger – 194
