Heading into the Dubai CrossFit Championship there were many compelling storylines and questions begging for answers. Day 1 of the competition didn’t give a whole lot, but it did offer up more things to keep an eye out for as we closed out the day at an indoor ski resort at Ski Dubai. Here are three takeaways from the opening day of competition.

Ricky’s redemption: One of the looming questions would be how Garard would respond in his first CrossFit sanctioned event after a four year ban due to a PED suspension. After only one day of competition he might have answered that question as he won the first two events in impressive fashion.

In Event 1A, Garard hunted down Roman Khrennikov in a workout seemingly tailor-made for the Russian. Sticking to his game plan, Garard caught Khrennikov in round three of a five round workout. Even when Khrennikov beat him off the ski erg in round four, Garard kept his cool and eventually passed him in the run up the ski slope finishing the event in 14:59, seven seconds ahead.
