Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up. The Indy Elite competition wraps up under the Miami lights tonight, while the Elite Teams of Three get ready to take the competition floor for the first time at the 2024 TYR Wodapalooza. We’ve got you covered with everything you need to know.

TYR WODAPALOOZA/DAY 2 LAY OF THE LAND

A rainy Thursday started off under cloudy skies with a cool breeze rolling across the bay. But, the action on the competition floor was hot and heavy and the first day of the 2024 TYR Wodapalooza competition in Miami, FL, is officially in the books. The four-day fitness festival enters day two with community members starting off their competition weekend as the elite individuals finish off theirs with two final events.

As expected, Gui Malheiros took Event 1: Double or Nothin’ with an impressive 310-pound complex of 1 snatch + 1 hang snatch for max load. His lift was 15 pounds heavier than the second-place (tied) finishers, Brent Fikowski and Jack Rozema. At the end of day one, Ricky Garard sits on top of the leaderboard with Games veteran Patrick Vellner in second and young gun Jack Farlow in third.

On the women’s side, Julia Hannaford pulled ahead of Dani Speegle to take Event 1 on Thursday with five overhead squats. Separately, Gabriela Migala had a great day, finishing day one on top of the leaderboard. Danielle Brandon and Emma Cary ended the day in second and third place, respectively.

One big number: 1 — Only one woman, Gabi Migala, finished all four scored events on day one in the top 10. (She finished 4th, 4th, 3rd, and 7th on the day.)

For the statisticians:

How to stay in the know:

Today’s top stories: Stay up to date on key stories as they develop.

  • As an all-outdoor event, the weather is almost always a factor at TYR WZA, and so far, that’s been true again this year. Day 1 events were adjusted to account for slippery surfaces as steady rain kept up all afternoon and into the evening.

  • With consistent finishes all day, Gabi Migala holds the day one lead at TYR WZA.

  • Reigning TYR WZA champ, Ricky Garard, closed the first day of competition in Miami at the top of the leaderboard.

  • How to watch the 2024 TYR WZA throughout the entire week.

  • Check out our guides on where to eat, grab a coffee, and workout in Miami this week.

  • ICYMI: Check out the latest episode of The Weekly Buzz for a TYR Wodapalooza preview and a bit about CrossFit HQ’s partnership with GORUCK.

One last thing: The weather has always been a factor in the TYR Wodapalooza competition, given its location and time of year. But it doesn’t make things any easier. The weather is looking better for the rest of the weekend. However, things could change and athletes and organizers (and fans) may need to pivot in short order.
