“Is Miami America? Is it a state? Is it the South? … I love Miami for the same reason I love the places I love most around the world… it’s the mix here, this big, messy, dysfunctional hell-broth of people from all over the world that make it so awesome and make it a place I want to keep coming back to. Also, the food’s good.” - Anthony Bourdain

2024 TYR WODAPALOOZA/DAY 1 LAY OF THE LAND
|
|
|
|
Thursday kicks off the first day of the 2024 TYR Wodapalooza competition in Miami, Florida. The four-day fitness festival will begin with elite individuals taking on three events throughout the day, starting with everyone’s favorite, a heavy lift. The competition for community members begins on Friday.
All eyes will be on the Brazilian, Gui Malheiros in Event 1: Double or Nothin’. Athletes will have two attempts at a complex of 1 snatch + 1 hang snatch for max load. Don’t forget some of the other big lifters in the field, including Nick Mathew, Bronislaw Olenkowicz, and Jack Farlow among many others.
-
Remind me: Last year Malheiros clean and jerked 395 pounds to win Event 4a: We Have Lift Off. At the time that was tied for the heaviest clean and jerk in a CrossFit competition, that was, until Jack Farlow hit 396 at the 2023 CrossFit Games.
On the women’s side, look to Dani Speegle for a solid start in Event 1, as well as Grace Walton, Gabi Migala, Olivia Kerstetter, and potentially Jessica Androsik too.
One big number: 45 – The number of seconds athletes will have to attempt their barbell complex and complete max effort Overhead Squats in the remaining time.

One new element we’ve seen is an epic floating competition stage built on the water which is sure to bring exciting and new challenges to the competition weekend.

Twenty-seven-year-old Lazar Djukic from Serbia has never finished outside of the top 10 at the CrossFit Games and has gone three straight years of top-nine overall placings from 2021-2023.
Throughout his three-year career so far, he has:
- Two CrossFit Games event wins
- 19 top-10 Games event finishes
- Two European Semifinal championships
Although he is undeniably one of the top athletes in the sport, he still somehow manages to remain overlooked by the community. Djukic says, however, that this is about to change in 2024.
To start off the New Year, we caught up with Djukic to talk about his rivalry with Roman Khrennikov, his crash with Justin Medeiros, his 2024 predictions, and much more.
Let’s dive in.
